Internal Affairs: August Draught

What was slow on the weekend, continues to be slow on Monday. News. This is the usual August Draught, when every normal guy is out for holidays or at the beach, only maniacs like us are sitting in front of a computer (be it at home, be it at the office).

Well, it#s what the germans call "Die Ruhe vor dem Sturm", the calm time before a storm breaks loose - there are a couple of great CRPG's to be released within the next months. But generally, the genre is keeping a rather low profile nowadays. The number of RPG's under development is significantly lower than it was a year ago, and the gaming community seems to be focused on RTS and shooters again. Bad thing? No, don't think so. In my humble opinion, there will be three CRPG's that will do a lot for our genre, becuase they could become what Halflife and Quake were to the FPS genre: they add great editors to the games they ship. The three are Dungeon Siege, Neverwinter Nights and Morrowind. Mods are important to games, because they build a loyal followship. I wouldn't be surprised that shorty after their releases, the developers or publishers will announce their sequels. It will be interesting to see which game will win in the retail channel, because I think of these three, only two will survive, the one selling the fewer copies will no make it to the longevity of the others - regardless of quality. Who will win? Dunno. Just for "appeal to a large audience", I would rank them this way: Dungeon Siege, Neverwinter nights, Morrowind. Not to say one is better than the other - it's only based on marketing thoughts. You can tell me if I am wrong after those games came out :-)
