Rend's Rants: Spicing up Morrowind

With the rumors of a Morrowind expansion floating on the net lately (no official word yet), and me still playing the game like a madman, I thought I could share some thoughts on the plugins I use and I created with you. My Morrowind is already heavily modified, but not unbalanced. I test all mods for gamebalance before I apply them to my game, and I do not add those that do not fit into the world of Morrowind.

So, which ones do i use? First of all, I added three homes to the game (built them from existing plugins, removed all unbalanced things and other loot). The first one is in Seyda Neen, and I modified the beginning of the game so the house fits into the storyline ("the emperor ordered me to give you the key to a house here in Seyda Neen, so you can have a place to stay), a second, small one in Balmora and a third one in Caldera. All of those houses are small ones, without secret training areas or teleportation facilities.

The mods I like most are those that add something to the game without disturbing the game balance. There is one to give all potion unique icons, another one adding travelling merchants to the world (they travel the roads with pack guars), and one that enhances alchemy. I have also added armor mannequins, sound enhancements (replacing most of the original Morrowind sound files), The armorer mod (currently 1.92 beta) and a mod that adds a lot of new arrows to the game. Of course I have all official plugins installed, and I have a small mod by myself that fixes some errors in the landscape, caused by conflicting mods.

While the game hasn't changed, really, it feels richer to me. I have played the original Morrowind without plugins for about 400 hours, and it is fun to see that plugins can give you a completely new gaming experience. And would you believe? Even after the long time I have played the game, I discover new things - even in Seyda Neen, and this is without the expansions. The new NVidia drivers gave me a notable performance boost, and I am having fun like on the first day.

Yeah, I might sound like a fan boy. All I can say is that I AM a fan of Morrowind, and I don't feel bad being one. If they really make an expansion (and I have no doubt they will), I will be looking forward to it. A lot. A big lot.
