On the Star Wars Galaxies forums, Harden Blackman discussed crime in the game. Here's a bit from the massive posting:
-Crime flourishes in part because the Empire is stretched pretty thin and can't possibly deal with every criminal report, especially with the Imperials' increasing focus on the Rebellion. The Empire certainly doesn't condone lawlessness or openly support known criminal organizations. However, despite its large fleet and vast amount of power, the Empire is trying to bring "order" to an entire galaxy. The Empire would certainly try to deal with a criminal group that becomes a threat, but most criminal operations can keep a low profile and conduct business without attracting the Empire's wrath.
-Many "criminals" may actually just be freedom fighters or others who are chafing under Imperial control. While Lando and Han Solo certainly engaged in "illegal activity" during the early days of the Empire and Rebellion, their moral compass was pointed in the right direction more often than not.
-Many crimes from the Republic are still considered crimes under the Empire. Murder, assault, theft, smuggling contraband, and other serious crimes still result in severe punishments. The only exceptions to this rule might involve Empire-sanctioned activities that require operatives to commit these crimes in the line of duty. |
