A truly awesome game. It's old, graphics are old... so what? They are good enough for their purpose, and amazing considering the age of the game! I mean, a true 3D world in 1991? Holy smokes! The interaction, story etc are nice. Even managed to beat the game without any kind of cheating - really played this properly only, what, 2 years ago? And almost finished UU2 too. |

I don't know specifically why but even though it was rather linear (it's not like you could skip a whole lot of stuff) and it was in real-time, I simply LOVED this game. It had atmosphere style and a good story. |

Ultima Underworld is nothing less than a MASTERPIECE, being also the first 3D RPG ever. Also, it is, to me, the best dungeon crawler ever made. Can you believe that I still played this game in 2004! Despite that the graphics are quite old they were top shape when this game got out more than 10 years ago, it had graphics that no other games, to my knowledge, had at this time. The old graphics (for 2004) doesn't affect the quality of this brilliant game, the story being well exploited like few other games did in the past.
I still think Ultima Underworld is one of the 5 best games ever, aside with the following games, whitch I suggest strongly: System Shock 2, Arx Fatalis (UW3), Deus Ex (1&2), Legacy of Kain (Blood Omen), Morrowind. See also Gauntlet 2, Ishar 3, Land of Lore, Doom 3 for other enjoyable games that touched me.

I still think that this is quite simply the best game ever made.
Underworld manages to get the balance between intrigue, combat, puzzles, riddles and interesting characters pretty much spot on. It's also still the only game that makes me get a bit nervous when I'm turning a corner. For all the reality graphics and 3D sound of more modern games like Morrowind or Half-Life, neither of them compare on that front.
Whilst newer games are of course something excellent to look at and can take place in much larger worlds with more characters, I believe that every RPG designer can learn something from this game. |

Without a doubt one of the best rpg I ever played. But the amazing controls take and important place and couldn't work in a fullscreen so are impossible to reuse in modern games. Story stuff and NPC dialogs are far to match the density of few recent RPG but the integration of action /exploration/puzzle/story is exemplary. |
