Below 10: A Developer Profile
Larian Studio's: Ingmar Clarysse
Set in an all new fantasy universe,
Divine Divinity takes the player on a fantastic quest in a
land torn apart by corruption and dark magic. Throughout his
journeys the player will get the chance to develop his character
as one of six character types and meet a variety of people
and fantastical beings. By combining the best features of
the RPG genre, and introducing a lot of new features, Divine
Divinity will appeal to both hardcore and new RPG players.
Below 10 is a series of developer profiles where we try to
establish a small profile by asking less than 10 questions
to a team of developers. This edition features artist Ingmar
Clarysse.
1) Tell us about yourself. Who are you and what do you
do at Larian Studios.
I'm
Ingmar, artist, mainly responsible for the objects for Divine
Divinity, some concept sketches, and the latest thing I
did for the game was a little sequence. I really enjoyed
this one!
2) What is your typical working day like?
Coming in early, most of the time a certain programmer
is still working and allows me to have my ritual artist
versus programmer "nagging session". After this
I boot up my computer, check my emails, start up Max and
create some magic. Besides that I have a tendency to arrogantly
criticize others health while smoking three packets of cigarettes
myself and consume megalithic quantities of Red Bull and
coffee.
3) What did you want to become when you grew up?
Quiet simple
an animator! The very first moment I
saw a cartoon on TV, I decided to create them myself.
4) What are your favourite games and what are you playing
now?
Fallout II, Diablo II
For seven month's - blasphemy! - I didn't play a single
game, I was to busy with creating one.
5) Where does your inspiration come from?
Everything: books, comics, chairs, paintings, museums,
films, observing things when walking around, my fellow colleagues
and my brother.
6) What is the coolest feature in Divinity for you?
I severely have to control myself now not to say 'chairs'!
But then I would get a headshot from the team!
No, the immense interactivity in Divine Divinity, that's
what it does for me.
7) Which feature that hasn't made it into Divinity is the
one you will miss most?
More chairs! Atomic bombs, space ships, the Fonz, He-man,
and of course Goldorak
euh
well actually nothing
globally, everything I wanted in the game is in.
8) How did you get into the gaming business and do you have
any advice for anyone seeking a position in that business?
I kept on nagging and being arrogant
but mainly the
persistence in nagging did it - lol. And of course having
studied classical animation for three and a half years,
and 6 years of art school before that, helped a little.
9) Is there anything you would like to add?
Special thanks to our beloved boss for donating so many
(expensive) cigars of his royal stash when we where in crunch-mode.
And does anybody know if there is a cure for chair-fetish-addiction?
(to help a friend of me of course
)
