After much delay and a few experiments with other things (maybe I'll talk about them eventually) I decided to bite the bullet and get the save/load feature working. There are a lot of things about the script language I don't like (BTW, if you're thinking of writing a game and developing your own scripting language, I'd advise against it: sooner or later you'll want a full-featured language so just go with that from the start).
