I want to add some thoughts to the newsbit our Editor In Chief Garrett has written on the Fileplanet affair (Who do you think you are?): If Fileplanet takes our exclusives without asking may seem like nada. After all, the internet is about free information and free downloads, isn't it?
Yes, it is. We had incidents with FilePlanet before, and we tried to resolve the matter peacefully. In short words, we asked them to let us have our exclusives exclusive for three days, then we would notify them so they could take the files on their server. First they told us that we could kiss their ass, then they ignored us.
I don't know if you know, but getting exlusives from developers and publishers is the result of hard work, of building relationships. We can't waive with bucks to get them. We put a lot of work into it. Getting exclusives makes us proud (oh, yes, we are human, need some padding from time to time), seeing them stolen makes us angry. Garrett WAS angry, believe me, and so was I.
Besides, with FilePlanet, information and downloading isn't for free. You'll have to register, and user information is a valuable asset on the net. Adresses equal money. So actually they use our work for their income. Granted, they don't make a fortune if they have our Gorasul Music :-) - but once again, this is about manners, about conduct.
We could just shut up. Stop messing with the big guys. Sure. But here we are: fans, running a decent CRPG news site for free, hosting other decent RPG sites for free, serving 1.000.000 banner impressions for other RPG Sites for free. Spending our money for these services. Staying away from popups or sign-up methods to generate money. We would like to be respected by Mr. Big FilePlanet. That's about all we are asking for... |
