PC.IGN serves us a preview of Arx Fatalis. Here's a bit:
After being introduced to your character and another of the prisoners, it was time to leave the cell. While the game isn't touting itself as anything close to a puzzle game like Myst, there will be some little mind benders that will make you sit back and ponder just a bit. Of course the beginning challenges aren't really much along the lines of difficult...to get out of the prison you just have to find some loose bars and loosen them some more.
Once you get out of the cell you'll have to fight your first opponent. Of course he's just a grunt, but you're naked and have only managed to find a bone to use as a weapon at this point. While the sight of your naked body might usually be enough to scare off any hostile characters, it's just not gonna cut it here. The combat system in Arx isn't anything that's really going to seem all that new to anyone. The fights are played out in real time here so you'll slash when you hit the mouse button. Of course, the computer still does some small calculations based on your stats, weapons, armor, and your opponents stats, weapons, and armor and decides whether you hit or not. Still, it's a more active role that I, for one, welcome. Various parts of the bodies will go flying around within no time and you'll be dancing atop the ruined corpse of your enemy celebrating the sad sot's demise.
Throughout the game, you'll be able to find a whole lot of different kinds of armor and weapons to use on your foes. Not only will you find all kinds of powerful melee weapons, but you'll also have the opportunity to knock some of your foes off before they can even get a whack at you. Bows and arrows and the like should come in handy as well as being able to throw things.
