Voodooextreme has interviewed Chris Carollo, ION Storm's lead programmer of Deus Ex 2. The questions from readers deal with quite a lot of topics, but you'll not get any specifics about Deus Ex 2 out of him, though. Here's a bit:

From Dave: How did you get hired by looking glass?

Chris's reply: I had written a Quake level editor for DOS called Quest (and was joined by Trey Harrison partway through development) during my senior year in college. It was done with the intention of using it as demo material when looking for a job after gradution, so I probably spent more time on it than any of my other projects. In any case, I sent my resume and demo disk to all the game companies I could name, and as it turns out Doug Church at LG had been looking through the homebrew Quake editors at the time because he was working on the editor for the Dark Engine. And as it turns out, when my resume crossed his desk he recognized my name and we did the standard phone interview -> in-person interview -> job offer thing.

My other demos were probably useful as well (.s3m player, asteroids clone, various demo effects), but the editor was my "in". That and an inordinate amount of luck. :)
