GameZone has an editorial up on farming in MMOs, a touchy subject (to say the least) for players and developers alike.
Of all the problems that have arisen to cause headaches for developers and gamers alike in the Massively Multiplayer Online genre, there has been one that persists despite all attempts to eradicate it. It is a problem that has lead to frustration and anger, both for players and for developers. And, in the end, it is a problem that the industry cannot afford to ignore. The problem is simple: real world economics have created a thriving, illicit trade where players are able to buy virtual goods. The result is a new class of player who is not interested in fun. They are not interested in playing the game. They are interested in making money. These players are beyond regular farmers. Many people call them “farmers,” but I have a new name for these players: uber-farmers.
