Age of Wonders: 8/10 points |
Fairly good strategy game.
Gets a bit repetitive after a while, due to lack of diplomacy options and no resource management. Unlike Civ3.
Still, with so little turn-based games out there, 'one can't be too critical.
p.s. Don't take the 2 idiots below me serious.. just look at their list of votes to see what I mean. |
Alternate Reality - The City: 10/10 points |
The gandfather of 1st person RPG's!
Never finished this one, but have very fond memories of it. I may be a bit biased as it was actually my very first, 1st person, RPG and got me hooked to the genre (for life it seems). Bards tales paled in comparison, IMHO. Some of the features I remember fiddling around with, were banking and jobs. Oh and I guess 'one has to enjoy turn-based combat. |
Baldur's Gate: 3/10 points |
Strongest part of BG, for me, was probably the humorous comments of some of the characters.
Unfortunately that did not make up for poor graphics/animations, uninteresting story, linearity and poor combat handling.
Seriously overrated.
And who cares about those hyped D&D rules anyway! It's not even original. |
Diablo: 3/10 points |
Fun for the first 20 minutes of play.
After that it becomes very boring very fast.
A true hack 'n' slash type of game. |
Divine Divinity: 4/10 points |
Lot's of solo hackin'-and-slashin' within lousy graphics. Didn't even bother to finish the bugger. Could of been great if released in the 1980s. |
Dungeon Siege: 1/10 points |
An utter piece of crap! Wish I never bought into the hype. Oh yeah, nice 3D graphics.. obviously for marketing purposes.
My advice for the serious RPG'r, stay far away from this one. |
Elder Scrolls 3 - Morrowind: 10/10 points |
Best 1st person RPG to date! |
Freelancer: 7/10 points |
Freelancer RPG!? Surely a mistake.
Funny game nonetheless, if you like fast paced space blasting action in a rigid plot. |
Jagged Alliance: 8/10 points |
Great fun!
Graphics are... err.. yeah.
And this IS a true RPG dammit!
Except this one has a very cool strategic element as a bonus! |
Jagged Alliance 2: 10/10 points |
Simply the best game ever made! Why isn't this one on top of the list? (And Kent McClard, you're reading my mind concerning a D&D version like this)
P.S. This game is as much an RPG as any isometric team-based RPG out there. |
Jagged Alliance 2 - Unfinished Business: 6/10 points |
A cheap add-on. No more (macro-) management. Far less enjoyable than the original JA2! |
Might & Magic 6 - The Mandate of Heaven: 7/10 points |
A good RPG. Bit long and repetitive, though. |
Neuromancer: 10/10 points |
Awesome cyberpunk RPG/adventure!
Loads of puzzle solving fun.
Horrid graphics for todays standards, however. Loved the triple dimension of this game, real world/online/cyberspace.
|
Neverwinter Nights: 4/10 points |
I expected a team game a la Icewind Dale, however it only allows ONE extra team member.. GUH!! Graphics are nice, though, but the story was kinda bland, more like running errants. Conclusion, not recommended for single play.
|
Pirates of the Caribbean: 3/10 points |
I half expected a Morrowind kinda game with pirates. I'm so sorry I did. The only thing this buggy game has going for it is the eye candy. |
Silent Storm: 6/10 points |
My first impression was, "WOW a 3D Jagged Alliance!".
But alas, I soon came to realize that JA2 was way better than this shallow clone.
Granted, the 3D engine which allows total destruction of envirement and includes ragdoll physics etc., make the combat totally superior to the simplistic 2D of JA2, but the game lacked interesting story and immersiveness somehow. I also disliked the fact that weapons and team members were free of charge, it takes away from the overall strategy, IMO. If only they had made it a more like JA, it would have been perfect. |
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic: 10/10 points |
I like Star Wars, I like a good story, I like great graphics, I don't like being nice, I definately like this game!
Bring on KOTOR 2! |
Wizardry 7 - Crusader of the Dark Savant: 10/10 points |
Best RPG of its time (a true classic) |
Wizardry 8: 8/10 points |
I always felt that this game lacked something. Perhaps it's the worlds emptyness or the groups of cloned creatures that lack variation.
I don't really know.
Fact is that I do find this a pretty cool RPG.
It has great story, speech, reasonable graphics, lots of stats and best of all turn-based combat! |
