GamerGod has posted a very interesting article on interdependency of crafting skills in MMOs. The article discusses the tendency for some developers to build dependency into their crafting systems, and how, from a role-playing perspective, this makes sense, but in reality it can create serious issues.
"Crafting Interdependency," the term and its implications have a tendency to make even the most committed crafters cringe. Essentially what the term implies is that in a massively-multiplayer environment, players are dependent on other players to complete crafted objects. Typically, players are forced to chose one form of specialized craftsmanship or another. However, in order to complete certain items, they must rely on other players who have chosen a different specialization to provide them with the necessary components for the final product.
