Why Play An MMORPG?

Arcadian Del Sol online has just been updated with its first reader submission. For those who don't know, Arcadian Del Sol online is one of several sites that sprang up in the messy wake left by the demise of Lum The Mad/ Slow News Day. The article itself was inspired by a .plan update by Brandon Reinhardt. Here's a quote from the original .plan update:

"And so I can say to all the potential game programmers out there who are playing this stuff: put it away. It'll kill you. It'll drain away your ability to improve yourself and it'll dilute your primary passion: coding. Instead of running home to code up a new idea, you'll run home to waste four hours doing nothing."

The article echoes these sentiments like so:

I have come to the same conclusion as Mr. Reinhart, but not because I am a programmer. MMORPGs require way too much of my life for what they give me in return. Yes, I can have fun with them, but the time I spend on them is time taken from my family or my other hobbies.

So what about you, faithful RPGDot reader. Do RPGs, online or off, take up too much of your time? Could there be something better for you to... wait! Where are you going? Don't leave!
