The latest Glimpse Inside at the official Earth And Beyond site has a look at space propulsion - that's what pushes space around, isn't it ? *g*. They talked to Janus Anderson, Lead Designer, about implementation of propulsion systems and to George Ziets, Earth and Beyond Writer, about the fictional relevance of propulsion systems and in Earth and Beyond:
There are many varieties of engines available so that a player can tailor the ship to their particular requirements. For example, an engine may have a fantastic Warp rating, making it particularly suitable for long distance travel, but also have a poor Thrust rating and be prone to malfunction when taking damage in combat. Another engine of the same value may provide great combat speed and reliability, but may perform poorly when encountering gravity wells. When choosing to purchase a new engine for their ship, a player will need to evaluate many options and decide which is most appropriate for their style of play.
Another important navigation factor is a ship's scanning capabilities. In order to quickly navigate to an unmapped location, the ship's computer must be able to 'see' the destination. Although all ships have built-in scanners, some are better than others - players who choose an explorer archetype will have many advantages when navigating through unknown territories." |
