Mimesis Monster Gallery

Derek Handley, 2001-10-08

Mimesis Online from Polish Developer Tannhauser Gate, is a role-playing game that transports you to a far future world where the unexpected and mysterious waits around every corner. An unimaginable catastrophe on a cosmic scale transformed this world, playing havoc with the natural order of things, twisting everything, even time itself, wiping out civilisation as we know it. Universes died, billions upon billions of species vanished, and a new, fragile and barely stable world was born. The beings who survived the catastrophe have tried to rebuild their world, each in their own way, and now live side-by-side but not truely in peace with each other, not truely accepting each other. Nations have emerged, almost completely isolated from each other by nigh-on impenetrable barriers. This is the twisted world of Mimesis Online.

There are no new screenshots in this diary. All the screenshots aready exited before. However Derek took a look at what we have and gave us the background info describing the monsters in them.

From the notes of Dr. Allee Gendar, xenobiologist to the court of Alcalia.
In the last few days I have investigated the wildlife of the land we call Starhold, and have found little that would be new or unknown to us, although I did observe some new behaviour that begs more research. My overall conclusion is that we can go ahead with the colonization of Starhold as planned, with increased precautionary measures in the vicinity of the central swamps and the deepest areas of forest.

Display full image Here we can see two Stregoica, or Lilith, as the rank and file call them. There were particularly many of these beings in the forest area. They generally avoided contact with my team, although there were a few close calls - these Lilith fall into a rage just as easily as those we encountered elsewhere. They seem to be engaged in some ritual here - it's difficult to say for sure. They ignored us almost completely, as if they didn't even know that we were there...
Display full image These creatures seem to be the alpha male of a pack and a challenger male. They were found fighting far from their pack - the fight was very ritualized to begin with, but became more and more vicious. The alpha male is the larger of the two - he won, and returned to the pack. The corpse of the other was brought back here for study - the skin surface seems to have some fascinating properties. We will have to do more study on these creatures.
Display full image These are Claw Spiders - we seem to find them in every land. These two are engaged in some show of superiority - if there was any dimorphism in this species, I would have said a pre-mating ritual, but as it is, we can but guess. We had to abandon our mission for one day after this encounter - two of my team had bad reactions to the toxic gases that these creatures emit when they are startled.
Display full image The largest creature we can see here is something new. I've heard reports of them from the Sierra Bask territories as well - I believe they call them Thull. The creature behaves like a scavenger, but we have evidence that its saliva is highly toxic - it was even seen spitting at other creatures. The spines are particularly interesting - biometal 80% - the exploitation potential is huge. The Stregoica in the foreground managed to drive away the creature, using her psionic energy field, but the effect took longer to work on the Thull than on, for example, the Raptaech that can be seen fleeing the scene.
Display full image This lone Raptaech was found in the northern hills - it's unusual to see one without a pack nearby. I've never seen one so small - perhaps the species this far north are weaker. One would hope so - it will make culling them so much easier.
Display full image This sky creature is something we don't have in Altair, nor do we have it in Dionia. We haven't named it yet. It presents little threat to us - it eats megacoleoptera and small pseudomammals - and the only pain it would seem capable of causing us is that it will remind us of the fact that we cannot take to the skies as our ancestors could...
Display full image The sky creatures are capable of defending themselves, as we can see here - a Raptaech got too close to its nest. The tail spike seems to be its favourite weapon.
Display full image We were able to get a good view over this scene from a ruined building - the salark team have not yet determined the era and purpose of the construction. This is when we discovered how the Thull could defend itself by spitting its thick saliva. Defense in this case did not save it - the Raptaech pack was not the only victor here though. The spines that we brought back for study came from this specimen.
Display full image The large creature has been termed an Arachne - it is one of the largest creatures we encountered here, and before colonization, we would do well to drive it back into the central swamp. This is an extremely aggressive species - I cannot stress that enough.

This basically finishes the story, but we take a small side step and have a look at where influences are derived from.

These show the original concept sketches for the Arachne Hunters, and the rendered versions. Tomasz came up with the Arachne Hunters thanks to a documentary on a colonial species of spider that was on 'Discovery'. He was very taken with the idea of these spiders - their behaviour wasn't like that of ants or termites or other colonial arthropods. The Arachne were the end result.
