Gamespy has done a preview of Age of Wonders 2: The Wizard's Throne. This is a part of the article about what to expect from this turn based strategy game:
This main campaign takes place over 20 missions, but there will be a scenario generator and an extensive map editor to greatly add to the replay value. In the beta version I saw, gameplay looked like the classic AoW formula of turn-based strategy combined with some empire building and role-playing. One of the game's producers noted that one of the developer's goals was to eliminate some of the superfluous micro-management found in the original while still maintaining depth. Improving the enemy AI is a high priority as well since it was one of the most criticized features in the original.
Magic plays a bigger part in the game, which makes sense since the main character is a wizard. However, magical abilities are highly customizable. You can advance Merlin to become a deadly projectile-spell-hurling machine or make him a bookworm that learns new spells at a mercurial rate. The various types of spells he can learn often have an inverse relationship, so if you're going heavy into one school of magic you'll most likely be weak in its opposite school. The skills and traits Merlin picks up aren't limited to his magical abilities; he can also learn diplomatic, entrepreneurial, and strategic skills. |
