Insomniac Gamers reviewed Warcraft III, Blizzards 3D strategy hit with action RPG elements. The following part is about the biggest innovation of Warcraft III to the genre:

Warcraft III's biggest innovation to the genre is the introduction of the "Hero" units - who act as field commanders of your army - almost like having some "champion" to lead the "grunt" troops. Blending the typical RTS Special Unit with the action-RPG elements of Diablo II, War3's Heroes can Level Up, carry items and equipment, cast spells, and generally become "bomb-bad" as they gain experience on the battlefield. This use of the Hero changes the game dynamic significantly from the old days of War2 (when you'd actually shelter a hero from battle) - now Heroes are almost always at the front lines, using their specific Auras, Spells, and Items to change the outcome of the fight.
