has rated the following games:
|
Deus Ex: 10/10 points |
Deus Ex is probably the only really successful attempt at combining an RPG with an FPS, as far as I know. It has an outstanding story, a great futuristic setting and game world, lots of nasty weapons, great character development, multiple solutions to every problem and even above average graphics. This game is on my Top 5 Of All Time list, that's for sure. |
Deus Ex 2: Invisible War: 2/10 points |
An incredibly disappointing sequel of a first class FPS/RPG hybrid. It's almost funny how much the developers managed to screw up in this game: they took most of the cool features from Deus Ex and made them WORSE! And if it was too cool they just took them out! Just compare the ammo in the two games.. Or the biomods/augmentations.. Or the weapon mods.. They've all changed to the worse. And skills (which was the best feature in Deus Ex) were removed completely.
Add to that minimal maps with horrendous loading times and you've got a 2/10 star game. |
Divine Divinity: 8/10 points |
The first 2/3's of this game is wonderful: Lots of quests, huge world, great character development, lots of action and equipment, satisfying skills and so on. It was great fun and actually required you to think once in a while. But the last part of the game wasn't as good. I'm not sure why, but it seemed as if the game ran out of steam near the end and the last maps I played through just to see the ending and not because it was fun. Strange, but still a great game! |
Dungeon Siege: 1/10 points |
Probably the only game that will ever get the lowest rating from me. It's a horrible attempt at making an RPG, where all you do is drink potions, optimize your characters, click on the mous and wander through endless corridors of nice graphics. It has no story, no dialogue, no brains and it reeks of Micro$oft culture. Unless Diablo/Diablo 2 are your favourite games ever, stay away from this piece of %¤. |
Elder Scrolls 2 - Daggerfall: 9/10 points |
Daggerfall has it all: the biggest game world you'll ever see (even if you played Elite), great character development, a great main quest, lots and lots of spells/skills/equipment/combat, oodles of side quests and even more dungeons and towns and other places. But it also came complete with lots and lots of bugs and design problems. Since most of the dungeons were computer generated, they always felt "unnecessary" and pointless. They were also way too big. Also, since the game was so buggy you almost always fell through the floor while walking through them and got stuck, having to reload. But other than that, this is a true classic that deserves its place among the greats in RPG heaven. |
Elder Scrolls 3 - Morrowind: 3/10 points |
Morrowind had so much going for it: great gameworld (set up by Arena/Daggerfall), great graphics, great character development system and great size. So what happened? I've never played an RPG that feels as "dead" as Morrowind does. Nothing ever moves, people say the same things, everything is brown and dull, the quests are simplistic and unrewarding and the game is way too easy and abusable. There's no atmosphere or Elder Scrolls feel to this game and it is, despite its size, extremely shallow and repetitive. Great disappointment. |
Fallout - A Post Nuclear Adventure: 8/10 points |
Fallout is one of those games that you just cannot dislike. It's rather buggy, it's short, it's timed (meaning you have a certain amount of time to finish it, which I usually hate) and it has borrowed a lot of things from my favourite RPG of all time, Wasteland. Despite all this, the game is extremely fun to play. There are lots of little details and funny dialogue to find, lots of exotic places to explore and a great story to follow behind all the combat and equipment gathering. It is a worthy follower in Wastelands mighty footsteps. |
Fallout 2: 9/10 points |
Fallout 2 is yet another extremely buggy game, but this time the bugs weren't "showstoppers" but mostly exploitable experience bugs and the occasional crashes to desktop. Other than that, Fallout 2 improves everything that made Fallout a great game: huge world to explore, more quests, longer main story, more enemies, more equipment and most importantly: more humour! One of the few games that's made me laugh out loud while I was playing it. Great atmosphere too. |
Gothic 2: 10/10 points |
When Gothic 2 came out I didn't even dare to hope it would be as good as Gothic was. Most sequels are either just more of the same or worse than the original. But Jowood actually managed to take the best parts of Gothic, improve the graphics, increase the world size and add more of everything and make the entire package even better! Even the story, which I originally thought would be Gothic 2's downfall was great and felt like it belonged in the world Gothic had set. Easily one of the best games I've ever played. |
King's Bounty: 8/10 points |
This isn't exactly an RPG, but more of a turn based strategy game with some RPG elements built into it. Anyhow, since it's on this list, I might as well review it. It's loads of fun, has great armies for you to control, an interesting story (that you can actually solve by guessing) and a fantasy world that's sure to please the D&D nerds of the world. Great game! |
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic: 7/10 points |
KotOR is a great game, make no mistake about that. It has a fantastic story, superb presentational values, wonderful voice actors and a setting that appeals to most of the nerds among us. What most reviews fail to mention, though, is that it also has very small maps, very easy quests, extremely linear worlds (although you can explore the worlds as you see fit) and the game is extremely easy to finish. The battles look amazing, but most of the time they start, you watch them, and it's over. There's almost no tactics involved and even the final boss was easy to defeat even though I wasn't really "trying". It's all too automatic and streamlined. Anyhow, a great game while it lasted. |
System Shock 2: 9/10 points |
System Shock 2 is the scariest game I've ever played in my entire life. I'm not kidding, it practically made me crap my pants. But if you put that nasty image aside, you'll find that this is also a quite successful attempt at combining the FPS and RPG genres in one game. To me, it's combat isn't that good, but since the RPG elements are excellent it works anyhow. It's claustrophobic, atmospheric, difficult and gripping. If you can still find it somewhere, I suggest you get hold of it. It should have come bundled with a pair of clean underwear though. |
