Guido Henkel Interview @ GameSpyDaily

GameSpyDaily has interviewed Guido Henkel, producer of the Realms of Arkania series (Northland Trilogy) and part time producer of Black Isle's Planescape: Torment. Most of the interview deals with Guido's new venture a.k.a G3 Studios, a company which will be dedicating itself to the development of video games for Handheld computers and -probably- the Game Boy Advance.

However, here's an interesting snip in which Guido talks about his CRPG past:

GameSpyDaily: What ever happened to the Realms of Arkania series? Got any inside knowledge on it that you care to share?

Guido: That’s a rather sad story. After “Shadows Over Riva” was done I decided that I wouldn’t want to make any more “Realms of Arkania” games for a number of reasons. Firstly, everyone on the team was burnt out after doing these games for five years without anything else inbetween. Secondly, as strange as it may sound, because of the tricky licensing agreements we had in place with the owners of the original pen & paper game, as well as the original creators of that game, it was a financial disaster. There was no way we could ever turn a decent profit on any game in that series, no matter how successful it would ever become. So, it just didn’t make sense from my perspective to continue with it.

However, my partners in Attic at the time disagreed and decided to do another one. The rest is basically history. I left the company and they tried to create “LMK – The Lady, The Mage and the Knight” which never saw the light of day because Attic ran out of money and people. Obviously the relationship with Sirtech, the US publisher of the “Realms of Arkania” games, also turned sour and eventually Sirtech reverted all the rights to Attic, terminating the relationship. Attic ceased to exist and the rights for the series now lie within the owners of the pen & paper game once again, I believe.
