Looking for some retro pleasure? Look no further than to Gamespydaily, they have an interview with Brian Green of Near Death Studios after their recent acquisition of Meridian 59 (some of you might actually have played it - I did in the early days of internet, and if you, for example, own the limited edition of Might & Magic 6, you've got the game on CD). Here's something from the interview:
GameSpyDaily: Why did you become interested in acquiring the Meridian 59 property?
Brian: Most game developer can tell you that when you work on a project, it becomes part of you. We put our hearts into Meridian 59 while working on it. Personally, I fell in love with the game. We both knew the potential that Meridian 59 had and wanted to help it reach that potential. Rob started talking to Trip Hawkins, CEO of 3DO, about a year before the servers were shut down. Trip agreed to sell the game and approached me about this opportunity. I was very excited to work on Meridian 59 again.
Even though Meridian 59 isn't filled with as much eye candy as other games out there, it still has many qualities not captured in other games. The game has a very tight community and some of the best PvP mechanics ever seen in a graphical online RPG.
GameSpyDaily: Meridian 59 has had some die-hard fans. Are there going to be any benefits for those that stuck around until 3DO finally pulled the plug? Are you going to recognize them in any way?
Brian: While we're not quite ready to comment on specifics yet, I am willing to say that the fans convinced us to pursue the purchase of the game from 3DO. We're really working on the game because we want to open the world up again for the players, especially the die-hard ones. As for specific recognition, we will have to see what our resources allow us to do. |
