RPG Vault has posted their first impressions of the recently released Arx Fatalis Demo and they really did like the demo (as we all did, didn't we :)The superlative graphics are matched by a tasteful use of music. Incidental tracks kick in at appropriate moments, their tone hinting at the nature of what is to follow. The ambient dungeon effects also complement the aesthetics; the sound of water dripping reinforces the notion of a dank environment, and a whistling wind can be heard, punctuated by distant cackles and screams. Sound also finds a functional use in the magic system, as the successful motioning of a spell is acknowledged by an accompanying chant of the spell's name. Also of note is the voice acting, which for the most part is competently executed.
With some months remaining until its projected release, Arx Fatalis certainly seems to be coming together very well. The trinity of moody graphics, sound and music combine ably to immerse the player in a convincing and menacing fantasy world. As for the gameplay, the magic system invoked by mouse gestures is an ingenious and enjoyable aspect, improved further by the colorful particle effects that accompany the incantations. The melee combat does pale a little in comparison, a possible result of which is that many players may opt to play the title with maxed out mage stats. In any case, we've been intrigued by this demo, sufficiently so to venture that Arx Fatalis will save players a fortune on sun cream and air fares when it appears in a few months. |
