As every month, we use the opportunity to take a look back on what the last thirty days brought - and by doing so, I have to say that April was an exceptional month for fans of CRPGs. First of all, there was Dungeon Siege - and while it isn't really a hardcore RPG, it was fun chopping and blasting your way through hordes of monsters, collecting items and enjoying the superb graphics. I am really curious if the editro (to be released next month) with breathe new life into the game - if those groups planning to do remakes of old Ultimas will find the power they need - or if we will be flooded with multiplayer maps only.
Then there was Might & Magic 9 - which IS a nice game if you stick to it, but given my personal expectations, it was a lost chance and a game that was a little bit rushed. There's still the M&M feeling in it, both the good and the bad parts, and wouldn't I have gotten the Morrowind Beta, I would have certainly spent a lot more time with this game than I finally did.
Which brings us to the major CRPG event in April - Morrowind going gold. I am soeone who likes to share joy and excitement - and therefore I am looking forward to the day when the game hits the stores (some people expect it for today, but I think most of you in the US will have to wait until tomorrow or thursday, the european fans will not see it until the end of next week, i suppose) and our forums will be flooded with initial impressions. The hype surrounding the game was and is enormous, and it was even more fueled by the previews on the net (including the ones I did). I expect two kinds of reactions from fans: utter disbelieve when they first step on the surface of Vvardenfell and reports about the incredible possibilities you will have in the game, and complaints from those with lower end systems that the performance will be below their expectations. It's hard for me to say where the fun starts, it's there with my 1300/Geforce 3 Ti 200 system for sure, but how the game will look and feel on a 800 Mhz machine - I can't tell.
What I can tell for sure: the mod community will LOVE the editor, and I expect some mods to switch from other editors to the one from Morrowind. it's easy to use, powerful, and never before has landscape editing been so easy. I am looking forward to the creativity this editor will spark.
How did RPGDot fare over the last 4 weeks? Well, 230.000 visitors and more than 900.000 pageviews is nothig you should be ashamed of, is it :-)? We nearly doubled our daily average pageviews this month, and over the whole server with our four sites, we are way beyond 1 million pageviews. While we are - of course - very happy with this development, it shows us that we are vulnerable in regards to reaching our bandwidth limit, too. Success has its price, and ads aren't going to pay for it. It might well be that, during May, we will have to point you to our paypal donation button in order to get some money for bandwidth we will use in excess. But nevertheless: the team here at RPGDot is very happy that you, the CRPG fans, are accepting our work, that you find this site useful and that you visit us regularly. In August, it will be three years that our site is online, and we have come a long way. What helped us most was your input. We changed a lot of things here followig your suggestions, and we are still doing it. While we have a stable system underneath now, and we haven't had a single server crash since months, we are still refining some parts here and there, improving usability and features where we can.
So, let's look forward to May, let's play our favorite RPGs and let's share the fun we have. :-) |
