WarCry has a series of two articles on virtual property, which are quite an interesting read if you haven't already burned out on this topic. You can find them here and here - and here's a snip:The monetization of virtual property sales and currency also means there’s potential for intervention from the government and legal side. Now that we’ve decided 50 million Isk is worth about $20, suddenly taking merchandise or ore worth 50 million Isk means I’ve stolen or deprived someone of $20 worth of goods. Theft, in other words, though I doubt it’d be prosecuted. If I sell you the cruiser I tricked out of my old corporation, suddenly, I’ve sold you stolen goods with an actual monetary value. If a bunch of my friends and I circle around you and say “Give us 500 gold each or we’re going to kill you endlessly,” we’ve commited extortion. 500 gold is worth about $32 at latest retail prices. Is that any different from walking up to someone and saying “Give me $32 or I punch you in the face?” Looking at the local legal code, larceny over $1,000 moves things up to a felony. If I scam you out of that super-rare drop, I may just have commited a felony. |
