RPGVault has a new look, and a new Black Moon Chronicles Development Diary. The 11th dev diary in the series is written by "Programmer Martin Tétreault" who "introduces the art and science of training the creatures that inhabit Vircom's online world":
The first step in making a horrible creature is to have it learn to walk. It is generally a fast and easy step, as most monsters get to learn to move with their legs - if any - in no time. Then, I tie a stick on their head - if any - and suspend bananas at the end. Motivated by hunger, they spend days pursuing this incredibly mouth-watering treat without ever getting to grab it. After a few weeks with this prosthesis on, they finally keep the behavior imprinted definitely in their brain - if any. This is how I manage to have creatures wandering around randomly inside the game.
The second step, training them for combat, is a little more complex. To teach my monsters combat and weapon-wielding techniques, I use an action/reaction technique. I place myself in front of the creature with a club in my hand and I hit it on the head as hard as I can. Usually, after ten or eleven repetitions of the treatment, the beasts start to learn to fight back. This method may seem easy when put that way, but keep in mind that, in order to train an orc one day, I had to hit it repeatedly for 38 hours before getting a reaction. Let me tell you, orcs are less intelligent than fleas. |
