Yet another MMORPG, but this time released in combination with a TV series: The Evolvers has been announced today. Here's the press release:
ULTRAPRIME NETWORK ANNOUNCES ONLINE GAME/TELEVISION SERIES CALLED THE EVOLVERS™
PHILADELPHIA, PA – OCTOBER 28, 2002 -- The UltraPrime Network has announced plans to develop The Evolvers™, an MMOG (massively multiplayer online game) which will allow online players to interact – “live” – with a new sci-fi television series. The game and the television series are scheduled to launch in late 2004.
“Game players will have the unique opportunity to participate in the television show and affect the storyline as the show is being broadcast,” says Neal Wiser, President of The UltraPrime Network. “Our goal is to develop a fascinating and unique sci-fi game/television experience not only for savvy sci-fi television viewers, but for advanced gamers and those new to the game world. We want to set the standard for how an interactive game/television franchise can be successfully developed.”
The game will be linked to the television series using a 2-Screen interactive-television strategy. 2-Screen iTV involves playing a computer game on a PC while watching the television series (single screen versions for Xbox™ and Playstation® 2 will follow). Existing technologies synchronize the game to the television broadcast allowing players to respond to events in the television show in real-time. However, players won’t have to wait for episodes of the TV show to air in order to play. The Evolvers is a persistent game, available 24 hours per day, everyday. The game serves as the core of The Evolver’s universe while episodes of the television series serve as brief windows into this universe.
About The Evolvers: The Game and the Television Series
The Evolvers game and the television series take place on a multitude of planets, moons, spacecraft and space stations, both real and virtual within the galaxy. The game will be launched using a modular strategy with new modules being introduced to coincide with quarterly “TV Sweeps” period (November, February, May, and July). Modules will include new content based on the corresponding episodes.
Players build alliances, develop strategies, and perform basic tasks and missions in order to establish a power base. Game play can be action oriented with players engaging in player vs. player or ship-based combat, strategic (focusing on asset management), or social. Although the goal of some players may be to participate in the television series, the success of all players ultimately depends on their personal growth and that of their character.
