Back in February of this year, SOE took a bold step forward and broke the mold with the very first (truly) MMORPG for a console -- EverQuest Online Adventures. EQOA served up a streamlined MMORPG experience on the PS2 which was much more accessible than its heavy-hitting PC counterpart. And although some skeptics wondered about the feasibility of crafting a successful MMORPG game on a console -- both in terms of its business model and the gameplay experience -- SOE has managed to hold its ground pretty well. Large competition is, however, looming for SOE, as Square-Enix's upcoming FFXI is set to hit the PS2 next year. And so this brings us up-to-date. Given the somewhat static nature of the Internet connectivity associated with the PS2, there's only a limited amount of updateable content that can be served.
