Hm. I wonder if this means marketing at Funcom starts to react to recent downfalls with Anarchy Online. Anyhow, this is a press release stating that AO will be sold cheaper by now:
ANARCHY ONLINE NOW AVAILABLE FOR $29.99
Funcom introduces new suggested retail price for the top-selling game
Durham, North Carolina-September 24, 2001 - Funcom announced today a new suggested retail price for Anarchy Online, the company's recently released massively multi-player online game. As Funcom is getting ready for the European launch of the game on September 28th, the company has set the new suggested retail price to $29.99 / € 32.99 in all markets. After already selling over 100,000 units since the game's U.S. and Nordic release in June, the change in price reflects Funcom's desire to reach an even wider audience in this quickly expanding online market.
Along with a lower price available in retail outlets worldwide, Funcom has set up a "try-before-you-buy" option at the official Anarchy Online web site, www.anarchy-online.com. Players can download the game and play it for free for seven days. After that time, a player can decide to purchase the game for $29.99 and will then have three full weeks before starting the first monthly billing cycle for the regular game subscription. As part of the company's dedication to customer satisfaction, Funcom wants to provide everyone with the opportunity to try the game before they make their purchase. The offer does not include the game box, manual and map. Full details of the purchase agreement can be viewed at http://www.anarchy-online.com/news/bigNews/download2.html.
"We know there are players out there, with connections to the Internet, who are just waiting for the right opportunity to see what online gaming is all about. This is that opportunity," said Funcom president Andre Backen. "We are excited to allow new players to join in with the thousands of other people playing Anarchy Online at any one time, and to get a feel for the community that has been created there, before having to pay for the initial cost of the game."
Anarchy Online features one of the largest persistent gaming worlds to date, and is the latest game to enter the massively multi-player online market. The game breaks ground due to its incredibly detailed science fiction universe, its breath-taking graphics, and the large number of people that can play the game at the same time. Anarchy Online hosts a next to unlimited number of gamers on a series of gaming dimensions, and currently up to 10,000 people can be logged on in the same gaming dimension.
Online gaming worlds like Anarchy Online have an exceptionally long shelf life and its competitors, EverQuest, Ultima Online and Asheron's Call, have been around for years. Anarchy Online will be released in Europe on September 28th and the exciting four-year storyline will start soon after that, providing an even more dynamic gaming environment for players worldwide.
