Arx Fatalis Element of the Week 4

Myrthos, 2001-08-30

Arx Fatalis is an RPG developed by Arkane Studios. It offers a number of interactions with objects and NPCs, realistic action fights, a unique real time spell casting system, character creation, dialogues, puzzles, exploration in an underground atmospheric world with various Cities inhabited by several races, galleries, dungeons and mines all intertwined by an unexpected epic plot.

We will bring you this Arx Fatalis Element of the week in collaboration with publisher Fishtank. This time we feature the dangerous ratmen.

The Ratmen
The ratmen have always had very few contact with the other races of Arx. They don't talk with words but only with signs and strange sounds. When the humans were still living outside, they lived in the underground and could be encountered in caves and in the sewers of the cities. The rare confrontations with ratmen were short and violent these days. They only made a few incursions in the human cities to scavenge food and other valuable things. Since they joined the underground fortress of Arx, they've slowly lost any contact with other races because the access to their region has been blocked by the Sisters of the Edurneum. They started a war with the dwarves for a while. But none of the belligerent was getting the upper hand, so the war stopped. They now live only wandering around, eating fungus and meat.

The ratmen are extremely dangerous. They have a great dexterity in combat and they are stealthy and very fast. Some of them are the best assassins on Arx. Rather than a direct confrontation these creatures will attack the back of the victim. They will strike with their poisoned blades only if they are sure that they will inflict maximum damage. They will fight to death. If a ratman is seriously wounded he will use a smoke bomb to vanish away. Then he will hide for a few minutes just to heal his wounds a little. After that he will start to track his victim down to finish the job. The ratmen will show no mercy so make sure that you saved your last prayer when you start to mess around with these creatures.
