Brad McQuaid, the man who left Sony/Everquest, was partner in an interview at CGO today. He talks about his decision to leave Sony, about his current affairs and more. Snippet supplied, talking about the idea to have NPC's run by real life people *g*:
Do you ever talk about the concept of having live NPCs [played by real people], and if so, is that cost prohibitive?

It is very cost prohibitive to employ enough people. We had always planned on doing that with EverQuest. That was something we were excited about, but it was one of those instances where we became a victim of our own success. We had so many people playing on so many servers that it was just cost prohibitive to employ enough people…You're almost talking about having a whole department of paid live actors continually running around the world, and that sounds wonderful, but it's quite a lot to bite off. That said I do think it will happen some day. We have a whole set of ideas on how to make that work. That could be part of the third generation of games, but it's going to have to take a very different approach, because having a warehouse of hundreds of live actors—I just don't see that as practical.
