This is Ultima's glory days. Although I was admittedly ticked off when I had to go all the way back to get that idiot sandlewood box! GAH!! I'll never make a mistake like that again.

Ahhh. The good old days of CRPGs. Games don't get much better than this.

The box said "Setting the standard for role-playing adventure". And that wasn't just a cheap slogan. Great game. I'll always prefer it to Diablo and its various clones.

Definitely the best Ultima ever, if not the best Roleplaying Game out there. The plot was involving, and the world seemed realistic, but not so realistic that you weren't required to use your imagination. That was the best part about the early Ultimas.

Would have got a 10 but I got bored when I got into the Underworld. Too much combat and aimless exploration for my liking. Having started the game 3 or 4 times since 1988 I only finished it for the first time last year. Needed the help of a walkthrough so I didn't wander around the Underworld forever.

Another excellent entry in the Ultima series.

One of the best games in the greatest rpg series ever!!!

Liek ultima 4, but with more story and a better developed world.

Sembiance has rated 6/10 points (Click here to see more Reviews from Sembiance)

It didn't quite have as much direction as I hoped it would have. Although Ultima 4, which I liked a lot, seemed to have even less direction, I somehow felt lost in Ultima 5, and the underworld wasn't all that great.

What brings back the most meories about this game is the fact that it was the only game I ever owned that I could play in the C128 mode on my C128 (It had a built in C64 mode for all the games). It had much better sound and graphics than Ultima IV and the game world was twice as large (with the new Underworld addition that sadly enough didn't bring anything interesting int othe game'). But if you like Ultima IV you won't be disappointed with Ultima V. It IS a great game after all!

This could have been the best Ultima if it weren't marred by a few flaws. If only the underworld had been better designed...it was too monotonous and confusing. But the rest of the game was top notch...much more detailed than the previous. And, of course, there was Blackthorne!

better than 4, but still not great.

The best ultima in my opinion. Had the tactical combat combined with good story and bearable graphics.

xeno has rated 7/10 points (Click here to see more Reviews from xeno)

the best ultima

Perhaps the best of the early CRPGs.

Dave has rated 8/10 points (Click here to see more Reviews from Dave)

My personal fav of the Ultima series. Basically just a slicker version of Ultima 4, but IMO, it was the polish it needed to make the game really easy to use/play.

Honestly, the entire Ultima history is a blur to me these days. I blame it on my extracurricular activities in college, but I do know that somewhere inbetween Ultima 3 to Ultima 5, I was introduced to the wonderful world of the Avatar, Lord Blackthorne, Lord British, Iolo and all the other trademarks of the Ultima series. A game WAY ahead of its time. This type of game is standard fare now but no one was trying to make RPGs as ambitious as the Ultima series in the 80's and early 90's. The great days of having to make a bootup floppy for your game to work and having a huge collection of disks because the game was so large compared to the inferior storage technology of the day. What a great game, it was the first time I'd ever played a game where I could get killed for stealing things. Ahhh... the memories.

Beautiful game, story and ideas.

Nightmare has rated 10/10 points (Click here to see more Reviews from Nightmare)

Just.. wow. The graphics were good for it's time, the music was nice, towns were much better designed than in Ultima IV, it was fun, and the plot was the best in the entire series, with only the possible excpetion of the combined Ultima VII...

Awesome game for its time. it allowed you to go anywhere and do anything. I even managed to construct a bridge from new magincia to buccaneers den with pirate ships!

Simply one of the best RPG's, if not the best. Large and complex world, many NPC's, most of which had something to offer, deep storyline.

Ultima 4 was great in it's day, but Ultima 5 is the first game in the series that I'd still recommend today. NPCs feel much more real than in the previous games, they follow a schedule rather than always standing in a set location and they have much more personality in their conversations. I think that was a big innovation as it makes exploring the towns and the characters who live in them as much fun as exploring dungeons and fighting monsters. The graphics may be crude, but the combat and magic system are very refined and it's still a lot of fun to play. Many modern RPGs could learn from Ultima 5 when it comes to creating an interesting storyline and an engrossing game, without needing pretty graphics.

Ironhawk has rated 10/10 points (Click here to see more Reviews from Ironhawk)

One of the best RPGs ever made. Still use it as a measure of comparison for any modern game.
