Another preview of Earth & Beyond can be found at Armchair Empire. Here's a bit:
Managing all this action is actually quite intuitive. I can honestly say this because, even without a manual and relying only on the basic tutorial, I was able to get right in there and monkey around with my ship, sell and buy items, interact with other characters while outside the ship, etc. The interface was well thought out. Whether flying or running, it’s solid all round. Instead of placing an emphasis on the keyboard, Westwood has made complete use of the mouse. While piloting your ship the onscreen cursor is used to select targets using the left button, the right is used for acceleration, and the movement of your mouse handles the movement of the ship. (You have to be holding down the right button to move.) There are a few keyboard shortcuts that come in handy when trying to evade enemy fire while keeping the enemy firmly in your sights so you’re not constantly juggling speed and selecting/firing weapons using just the mouse. Selecting a target is easy – just left click on it. There’s an “overhead” map of each sector to show the major points of interest but not the individual ships in the sector. (Instead you have to rely on the “round the screen” radar.) When one of these is selected a small picture of the target appears in the bottom right of the screen. Hit “Warp” and you’re on your way. Transport isn’t instantaneous. If you’re 200 "clicks" away it’s takes a few minutes to reach your destination (forever if you go via your top cruising speed). These downtimes are good for flipping open your stats to remind yourself what you should be doing or how close you are to earning another experience level. Or these breaks can be used for executing warp speed evasive maneuvers.
And then there is one at Game Over...
