Gamespy has the next Etherlords Dev Diary online today. They talk about creating credible "foreign language" audio and sound effects for the NPC's and critters in the game. As I hang around in studios quite often due to my real life job, I know that this can be helluva fun :-). This is how the article starts:
Today I will tell you about my favorite part of the job. If you didn't read my confessions last week, I'll remind you that I am one of the sound guys. My primary task is creating sound effects, i.e., working side by side with Nival's sound producer to make heroes, monsters, spells, buildings, water, wind, trees and a whole lot of other things produce different kind of sounds. I guess you've heard about sound libraries that we, sound engineers, most often use in our work. A sound library is a huge database that contains all sorts of sounds that have one thing in common -- these are the sounds produced by various things and creatures actually existing in our everyday reality. The reason why a sound library does not provide us with the sounds we need is that we are making a fantasy game, i.e., a reality that has so many things in it that do not really exist.
