HomeLan has done an interview with Production Director Ken Troop about the upcoming AC expansion Dark Majesty. Here's something for you:

HomeLAN - The game has been known for its regular updates for new content on
a regular basis. Why did you decide that now would be a good time for a retail expansion pack?

Ken Troop - While we were very happy with the results of the monthly Event model, we also recognized that there was a couple of significant gaps in that model. First, we had desires to do something big. For example, we had long wanted to implement Player-owned housing , but the pressures and demands of the monthly updates made an introduction of this type of feature through a monthly update impossible. The development and testing time would have taken far longer than a month, and trying to always make sure that the unfinished development of the system didn't impact or undermine the performance of a Live and active playing environment would have been extremely difficult and risky.

So we knew we needed a way of having a development cycle that was connected but ultimately completely separate from our Live service. We also knew that renewing our presence in the stores and in the minds of gamers, along with a CD that contained the latest of our monthly content (since we've shipped, we have downloaded over 100 megs of data to our subscribers), was a huge plus for the Asheron's Call service. Both of these thoughts came together and made us realize that an expansion pack was a valuable addition to our monthly Event model.
