As I had promised Sunday, this is the followup to my "Bring On The Mods" editorial. It is meant to be more of a helpful guide and introduction to the new "Mod User" to what I consider to be some of the higher quality modsites for some of the more popular RPG's as opposed to even attempt to be an "all-inclusive" listing of the many and varied modsites that, in reality, exist within this vast and virtual universe we call the internet.
With that in mind, let the tour begin:
(1) When it comes to (mostly) Mods for BioWare's Infinity Engine (i.e. the Planescape Torment, Baldur's Gate/Baldur's Gate 2, Icewind Dale/Icewind Dale 2 games, etc.) - probably one of my favorite potpourri modsites would have to be, without question, the Sorcerer's Place. An additional "Infinity Engine" modsites of an equal caliber and quality would be the Pocket Plane Group, which also has the distinction of having compiled and researched a vast library reference to all the other "Infinity Engine" modsites, which should cover almost every conceivable BG/BG2/IWD/IWD2/PST modding desire.
(2) Without question, the premier modsite for every conceivable Star Wars KotOR/KotOR 2 mod that could ever be imagined (and for some that could not) would be the Holowan Laboratories - an excellent site for both the beginning and the veteran Mod Engineer to get started with KotOR/KotOR 2 mod making, as well as being the "Macy's" of modding for the casual KotOR/KotOR 2 enthusiast. Those of you new to mods and modding will also find many of the Mod Engineers that comprise the Holowan Laboratories to be most helpful, in addition to the many helpful "how to" forum threads posted there.
(3) Insofar as mods, mod utilities, news and all things pertaining to Morrowind - there is (IMHO) only the Morrowind Summit, a very easy modsite in which to navigate around for all of your Morrowind epic adventuring needs.
(4) When you think about Freelancer, then there is no other modsite that even begins to approach that of Lancer's Reactor for all of your modding needs - be it mod or server news and links, forums and help, or just for the occasional collector of either Single Player or Multi Player mods for their Freelancer gaming enhancement.
(5) For those of you looking to "spice up" your Temple of Elemental Evil gaming - look no further than to the Circle of Eight for all things TOEE related, be they mods, patches and "fan-fixes", scripts, TOEE modding utilities, or just help with almost any TOEE modding issue.
(6) The Terra Arcanum modsite is probably the oldest of it's kind for Troika's legendary Arcanum. Additionally, the site also hosts "fan-fixes" and other miscellaneous items for both TOEE, and for Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines as well.
(7) Though not necessarily a part of my own favorite modsites - I felt it only fair to pass along two unique modsites that were recommended to me via reader's comments to the "Side Quest: Bring On The Mods" editorial...so with that in mind, I'd like to thank both Horace for his information re FlameStryke's Wizardry 8 modsite, and to thank theUnguru for passing along the word re the Diablo 2 modsite known as the Phrozen Keep.
(8) Two very well organized, gaming fansites that just happen to cover almost anything the reader could ever desire happen to be located right here within the RPGDot network, i.e. UltimaDot for all of your Ultima-related needs, and GothicDot for all of your Gothic-related needs.
(9) When it comes to anything worth having (and/or modding) re GPG's epic Dungeon Siege series, then there are two modsites that I call my personal favorites - i.e. the Planet Dungeon Siege modsite, and/or the Dungeon Siege Developer's Guild modsite. Additionally, though I don't believe all of the "links" are current as of this day and age, you may want to peruse the Dungeon Siege Heaven for their many fine links to other Dungeon Siege modsites, as well as their various items, articles, news, etc.
(10) The premium modsite for all things related to either Neverwinter Nights/Neverwinter Nights 2/Dragon Age would have to be, hands down, the Neverwinter Vault - they even keep the latest CEP files and patches available, as well as always featuring the most current news on these three games, and all of the Persistent Worlds that spawned thereof.
(11) No question about it - when it comes to anything Might & Magic related, there is really only one modsite that "fits the bill" (so to speak) - that being the Celestial Heavens modsite.
(12) And in closing - for those of you who may have other "mod needs", i.e. you are in the market more for "cheat codes" and/or "trainers" and such for whatever particular game you happen to be playing, I would recommend you peruse the MegaGames website - especially for new and/or current "trainers" - if they don't have it, then it hasn't been created yet:-)
I'm quite sure that many of you have your own favorite modsites above and beyond what I have presented in this feature...and I would invite you to tell us about them with any forum comments you might wish to make. |
