Gamespy has a very nice series of interviews with the folks behind Morrowind, the upcoming third installment in the Elder Scrolls saga. Here's something from Douglas Goodall:
GameSpy: What games or projects have you worked on before Morrowind? How has that experience helped you on this game?
Douglas Goodall: I didn't work on any games that actually made it to the stores... My first failure of a computer game was a joust-like thing for the Apple II in assembler. My last failure of a computer game was a half-written MUD server in Java. I was in a few projects on the Internet and with other companies, none of which lasted more than a year or managed to produce a demo.
I have just enough programming and 3D art experience from college and goofing off at home to *communicate* with the artists and programmers, and that's been a big help at times (and an annoyance to other team members at times). I worked for architects in the past, and that helped when I was doing level design. As for quest-design, I've been playing both pen and paper and computer role-playing games since I was 7. Let's just say I'm familiar with the genre. |
