A nice preview of Ryzom, an upcoming MMORPG by Nevrax, can be found at Gamespy today. Here's a little info about the game:
Ryzom's setting is something completely new, created from whole cloth by a subcontractor who is no longer working with Nevrax, and now shaped by Cohen-Corval himself. The name Ryzom comes partly from the word rhizome, meaning the roots of a mushroom. This alludes to the game's setting on "Atys," a plant world with no indigenous metals or stone. The title also comes from an astronomical term for a network of galaxies, but the first incarnation of the game takes place solely on Atys (Cohen-Corval makes several references to "Ryzom 2.0" and plans to extend the game to new worlds). The planet's surface is known as The Bark, with huge branches soaring hundreds of miles into the sky, forming The Canopy. There are also deep caverns underneath called The Primordial Roots. The planet is host to four humanoid species, and nary an elf or orc among them.

Each species has proprietary technology, unique clothing, and a predilection for one of Atys' terrain types. The Fyros live in a regimented society in the desert, where they've harnessed the power of fire to make guns, combustion engines, and armor forged from tough flame-resistant wood. The Tyrkers are a carefree people who live in Caribbean island environments on floating platforms, piloting boats powered by propellers and sails. The Matis are forest-dwellers who've perfected genetic manipulation, and the Zorais are jungle-dwellers who wear horned masks that change shape with time and experience. Of the four races, the Zorais are the most efficient at using magic, which exists on Atys in tension with technology.
