Brian Green from Near Death Studios has been interviewed at Stratics as Meridian 59 prepares to add a graphical and UI overhaul:What is the setting and content of Meridian59 Resurrection? The world is PvP, but what is it you're fighting for? Is it land, resources, purely political, etc?
The setting is standard high fantasy. The background story is that the land of Meridian 59 was a settlement from the great Kingdom of the Nexus. However, the magical paths back home were broken, leaving the people to fend for themselves. The game takes place many centuries after the original settlers, so civilization has once again established itself in various areas, but there's still plenty of wilderness.
Meridian 59 doesn't enforce one type of play style or another. You can hunt monsters or players, as you see fit. Of course, neither monsters nor players are going to ignore you just because you're hunting the other. :)
That said, most players do engage in PvP battles. There's nothing enforcing the combat in the game; people often find their own reasons for wanting to battle with each other. At the most basic level, you can choose to attack another player without cause. However, if that person is an innocent (someone who has not attacked or killed another innocent), then you will become an outlaw. If you actually kill the player, you will become a murderer. Anyone can attack an outlaw or murderer without penalty. Murderers also take more harsh penalties when they are defeated in combat. |
