This game was so well done in so many ways (interface glitches being my only complaint) that I wouldn't know where to start. The storyline is truly my favorite aspect, as well as the NPC interaction and daily schedule variety. Given a good story and well done character advancement, the interface is very secondary, I can get used to anything. |

This game freakin rules! I've never had such a pleasing amount of freedom... Though some things in the storyline don't make sense, like why won't the king send an army to take over the camp? And if we can't get out, how do we get the Ore out? Oh well gameplay is great! |

Although incredibly linear, Gothic had something about it that draws you in. Perhaps it was the simplicity of its action-oriented combat. Perhaps it was the fact that all characters were voiced. Whatever it was, it was a great RPG.

Gothic has both kinds of bugs. The kind you hack & slash and the kind that you curse about while your pc is resetting. If it were not for the latter I would give it a perfect score. Gothic 2 should be equally as fun but maybe without so many bugs. |

One of the best RPG's to come out in the States in years. If more games were like Gothic I wouldn't have a life because my eyes would be getting square from playing awesome games like this. The interface, was annoying at first, but at the end of the game I was wishing more game designers used a similar interface. |

This game was very immersive and its setting had originality. I enjoyed it for as long as it took to finish it, which wasn't very long at all. Hence my main problem with the game. For all its immersive dream like qualities, it's all over too soon. |

Over rated title. Great graphics. Bad controls. Poor support from dev and publisher. Game feels open-ended and reactive to player actions initially, but its a sham and it disappears as soon as you have joined a camp. The game then becomes as linear as a FF game. |

Its frightning, there are many things you could list that this game doesn't have and things that could be improved, but its still one of the best games I have ever played!
If the developers get their act together for Gothic 2 its gonna be an incredible tile, maybe no Morrowind killer, but still worth every penny and second you spend on it. |

At first, I was caught up with how deeply developed this game was, every NPC had a life, they ate, slept, talked... the world was beautiful, combat wasn't too increadably difficult. But after the first few hours, it got dry, very dry. The interface was ugly, but simple, the combat became repetitive and boring, and what you hoped would be a huge world, was covered in about a half an hour. Oh, and there were bugs... not many, but they hurt the gameplay a noticable amount (from odd glitches, illegible inventory... to frustraiting lock-ups and reboots). This title was basicly the "I'm waiting for Morrowind" title. |

gothic is the best rpg but it needs more...like multiplayer so other gothic players can interact with each other and do quest with each other like in dungeon siege this should be put in gothic 2 but first it should come out as a add on for gothic so we can download it.it would also be nice if you could do way more things in gothic 2 like build huts or farms and be able to sell your food to a mill its a good idea...thats all i have to say about gothic exept for one more thing gothic ownz all the rpg games ;p |

The interface is quite difficult to get used to, but once you do the game becomes more and more interesting. Unlike Morrowind combat is challanging and npcs are very real. The story is OK and your character has some freedom of choice. The game is certainly not perfect but I think the designers are on the right track. Looking forward to Gothic2. |

This game is the first RPG I really like, I've played Baldurs Gate II and Diablo II but those were nothing compared with Gothic. There is only 1 negative thing about Gothic and that are the combat-controls wich make it very difficult to fight multiple enemies. |

What a surprise! I really love taking a chance on a new and relatively unknown game and getting my socks knocked off. Sheesh this game has a great feel, good storyline, great combat, real flexibility (like luring carnivorous dinosaurs into a crowde marketplace). Worth the money, worth the time. |

I love the freedom and realism that is in this game. The reason i didn't give this a 10 out of 10 is because of the constant glitches and extreme amonet of power in the end of the game. I enjoyed the beginning much more than the end because I was forced to some degree to act according to the laws of the camp, while in the end I could swing a sword or cast a spell and exterminate people in masses. |

This is an awesome game...even if it didn't work right with my 'puter(graphic card prob.) It has alot of the elements that make an rpg great and the interface is easy to use once accustomed to it, and the up close detail! Sooooo very nice. Now for the part I didn't like. The babes don't talk, there is no gender/voice/build/hair/eye/skin option, there is no rope n grapnel to use, you can't have a party with you(scept summoned monsters)and some minor things like that. Other than that, Gothic is one of the very best games I've played in my entire life span(16 yrs. hehe)And I look forward to see what PB will turn out in Gothic II.

I found this to be the perfect game for my likings. Lots to do and lots of npc activity. The world size was just right. There was just enough distance betwen locations to make it feel like you were travelling a distance without making it feel boring. The number of different monsters (villians) was great, and the growth of the character and story was well done. Most of all, this game came out of no where for me. It was not a crock of glorified hype pushed into uber status by the fan-boys. Gee, what game could that be :/ ? |

Ive read the comments here and to those who said its 'not as good as morrowind will be' or a 'waiting for morrowind game' im sure your wishing you could take that back right now(i was very dissapointed by morrowind, it was just so damn boring. the game didnt have enough bright colors, the chars didnt move right, and you always had to do the go fetch quests...).Gothic was a VERY well crafted game, to those who said the story was linear obviously you havnt played Diablo 2 lately hmm? yes its buggy, yes its got a bad interface BUT without a doubt it is by far the best rpg of the 3D era. |

This is by far the most fun RPG I have played. Every charcter is alive and busily at work. the home-made engine proves to be truley unique and perfect for this game. The story line is good, non-linear in the begining. I give it a ten. |

I liked the Story, the Characters, the Quests and the GFX and Sounds. But the Engine itself was the worst i´ve ever seen. 20 FPS isn t enough PIRANHA BYTES !!!!. And the Ending was too obvious. Maybe Gothic 2 will be more complex. |

This game did everything right that Ultima 9 Ascension did wrong. Prior to Morrowind this is the first game I have felt truly lived up to the legacy that Ultima 7 left. This game could only have made me happier if it had called itself Ultima (x) and cast the Avatar as its lead. However it didn't and instead created a whole new fascinating world in which to play. Little touches like being able to cook meat, or create swords raises this above nearly all the competition.

Excellent, excellent game. I recomend it to anyone sick of mindless shooters or number crunching D&D rpg's. Decent graphics, very good story (although with a slow take off), and a very rich world to explore. It comes with its share of bugs, but these mainly concern the interface and the bugs are minor. So after you conquer the controls your in for a great game experience! |

I used to hate and still ,the strategy games basing on mouse orders ,Go†hic isn't a strategy game.

wow, just one word, this game is an amazing RPG, in other RPG's you have to follow the path wich is created for you and you can't get anywere in the map untill you are asked to. In this game you can come everywere werever you want. It's just amazing. In other RPG's you can see if people like ore not by numbers. In this game the characters will tell you if they like you or not.
I really think this is a revalutionare RPG game. I have a lot of respect for the people of piranha bytes.

I bought the game without the manual included. So, I was really frustrated about the controls. I spent the whole 30 minutes figuring out how to pick up the torch, another 30 minutes to climb the ladder, another 30 minutes to kill the meatbug, and etc. I also spent a day or two in getting used with the combat. But all in all it is a good game with a good story. If only they've included the manual I would give this game a 9. |

Gothic is a great game. I liked that the NPCs had their own lives. the storyline was easy to follow and the interaction with others made is extremely intersting and fun (I especially liked the voice-over of the conversations - rather than just reading them). I liked the 3D world and the way the story deepened and its logical progression. It could've been longer, but then I'm looking for a fault, lol.

This game works well with the nature of a true RPG, although you're a little strict to the storyline by being not allowed to do much outside quests. Other then this, the game is amazing. I had only minor problems with controls at first, but I got used to them. The graphics are beautiful and the story itself is unique in it's own. This game was hands down the best RPG I've ever played. The weapons and items screen is simple to use and well organized, the amount of in game dialogue is massive, and you get to stab people! the only qualms I have about this game is the annoying mouse + forward action deal, and the struggle at the beggining as a new-comer. Overall, good game. Get it if you can still find it. |

One of the best games I have ever played. The control sistem is a bit chaotic at first but in time u get used to it. It has a few minor bugs but none too serious. And that's about it for the cons. Gothic has this amazing atmosphere. I liked it because i could shape my character during the game just as i wanted. The idea of joining factions isnt someting new but is niceky implemented. Also all the characters in the game have a personality of their own and even though the the developers used the same voices for more than one NPC the efffect is great. I read in a review once that a downside of the dialogue is that the accent is too modern but i think its cooler this way.

Fasinating. This game has good storyline, very neat graphics in a artistic way, and live NPCs. The only downside of the game was that it has some bugs even after downloading the latest patch, otherwise it is almost perfect and it is also the best RPG exist on earth. |

Perfect, but the successor have better fighting system. Every time I've tried to kill someone, he defended himself and I was unable to do any damage. It were very loooooong battles (sometimes)(without spells in old wizard's tower!@%#) and the final battle was very poor. |

When I first played the demo of Gothic 1 I thought the graphics were average and the controls were odd. It seemed to be a hack n slash with little RPG.
About 6 months later I read some rave reviews of Gothic on RPGDot and decided to give the demo another try.
I discovered an incredibly immersive roleplaying experience that took my breath away.
Negatives first: There are a host of bugs in the game, which are all easily avoided or overcome by reading gothic forums and faqs.
It seems they hired about 6 voice actors for the English version. More actors would have added diversity to the NPC's.
Some of the controls are odd and take a while to get used to (if at all)
Now on to the positives:
The game is so good, so immersive that all the negatives are easily forgotten.
I am the type of gamer who enjoys good background stories, character development, freedom to explore, well written dialogue.
Every word of conversation in Gothic is spoken by voice actors. You can toggle subtitles on if you wish, but the voices add a level of immersion which I have never experienced before. As of this writing (4-3-05) Everquest2 has tried to add a limited amount of voice acting to their game, but it's only a small amount.
Gothic 2 was also a fantastic game.
Play them both if you have not yet done so!! |

definitely the best rpg i have ever played. nice graphics, amazing atmosphere, a incredible world, i even like the controls. you get used to it very quick and i dont wand to change it.

This game was by far the best game I have ever played. That was until Gothic II came out. The story line was great, the graphics where awesome and even though many complain about the controls I soon adjusted to them. I have never been drawn into a game the way this one does. |

Awsome atmosphere and a very good story and NPC interaction. For it's time outstanding graphics. Some say it's too short, but for me it was absolutly right and a gaming experience I'll never forget. |

Read my review on Gothic 2 to get a feel for the gameplay. Basically, it plays like an MMORPG: action-combat, difficult tedious leveling that requires plenty of killing, and no linear track which means everything is fair game at any level. If you don't like that type of gameplay, you'll never love the Gothic series. If you do enjoy that type of gameplay, you'll fall in love with Gothic as long as you can get used to the controls. Overall, Gothic 2 is a superior game to Gothic 1 but the first game is still an underrated gem in itself which probably has more "personality" than the sequel. It has much smaller land plots to explore compared to Gothic 2, but I enjoyed the dungeons (especially the last one!) in Gothic 1 much more than I did Gothic 2. I also thought the factions and story were cooler in Gothic 1. The old and new camps full of brute thugs, and the cult sleeper camp are a riot to explore. This game is becoming more and more difficult to find, you might have to go to Ebay to get a copy. I recommend you begin with this one first, but if you couldn't get into the clumsy control system, try Gothic 2 first because it's more streamlined. |

Simply amazing. The gigantic world and amazing characters blended well, and the voice acting really draws you into the whole experience. Most people have good developement and do rational things depending on their attitude and your actions. There are many different things to do, and the NPCs have a lot to do as well, it seems. Someone would have a hard time getting bored playing this. |

Gothic has by far been the ABSOLUTELY BEST GAME that I have ever played. In fact, if I ever run into any gamer at all -- even complete strangers at a gaming store! -- and I find they haven't played this game, I strongly urge them to play it. Indeed, there are times when I wonder if I should be collecting some commission promoting Gothic and Gothic II like this!!! But then, I realize that my greatest reward is just to see the developers making more and more of the Gothic sequels, and NEVER EVER STOPPING! |

If you can get past all the bugs and enjoy the game, you'll get addicted. Nice mix between RPG and action. Immersivity is the aspect i liked most. The attention to detail is simply awesome. Is spite of the bugs, i gave the game a perfect score. |
