Gamebunny has posted the 3rd part of their Dev Shakedown series where they ask various MMORPG developers to answer two questions. Here's a snip:What keeps MMOs from attracting larger audiences? Is it monthly fees, the time sink involved, competition from other media, etc.?
Peter Tyson (Dragon Empires):
There are a few reasons why there aren't larger audiences. Firstly, I'd say it is because the genres tend not to attract the more mainstream gamers. However, even if they did they would still not appeal because MMOGs tend to require a lot of time to 'complete' and tend to require a lot of time to follow and keep up with developments. Most gamers aren't interested in this kind of gameplay. Will MMOGs ever be mainstream? Not as we know them now I don't think. But that's ok, the market is growing and new games are pushing the boundaries all the time. |
