Arcadian Del Sol Online has published an interview with Jonathan "Callandryl" Hanna, discussing Ultima Online. Quit interesting stuff, as you can see from this snippet:
Q: For a time, it seemed like 'scandals' were coming at a rate of three times a week. GM this, GM that, Seer this doing that and well lets not get into details. These scandals generated protest that we would later call rant sites. Feel free to be completely honest about this, but regarding rant sites: would you say they did more harm than good to OSI/UO/The industry? What is your opinion of the 'anti-establishment' styled rant sites? And feel free to be honest.

I think they did more good than harm. If I didn't think that, I wouldn't post on their boards or do interviews with them. (chuckle) I say this a lot, and I know a lot of people find it hard to believe, but I prefer to read about what I am doing wrong than what I am doing right. Not that I don't want praise, of course I do. But I also want someone who is going to point out the things they don't like. At the same time, I don't want someone who is always negative just because they have a bone to pick with a company. But most good rant sites didn't do that.

My only real issue with rant sites is that most don't see themselves as a "news" site. I don't agree. I said this on a rant site a long time ago, but it's sort of like being a role model. You don't get to decide whether you are a role model or not. The people do. If people look up to you, you are a role model. Whether you like it or not, whether you want to be or not, and whether you think you should be or not is irrelevant. I see rant sites as the same way, and I think they do have a responsibility to verify what they post on their site, especially if it contains people's real names. I've personally been in meetings and game conventions where people have said "yea, I read about what so and so did on [insert site here] last week." I'd hate to have something about me that wasn't true posted on a site being read by my peers. But, aside from that one issue, I really enjoy reading rant-sites and interacting with their readers.
