We've got nearly 600 RPG's in our database here at RPGDot, and from time to time, we will have a short look at one of the older games in there. This time, I want to look back at Birthright: The Gorgon's Alliance by Sierra. Anyone actually plyed that? I still have the CD somewhere hidden in my collection, but the game didn't capture me for long when I bought it years ago.
Birthright was a mix between tactical, strategic and 1st person game. Three seperate parts - and they didn't fit well. You planned your campaing on a map, you commanded your troops in a pseudo 3D view and you gained additional experioence by going on quests in a 3D world. Sounds great, but wasn't. The game had immense potential for that time, but poor implementation ruined all fun whatsoever. It was hard to learn and impossible to play, since tzhe 3D missions were too diffficult. Birthright came with a thick manual, but this wasn't too helpful either. The game didn't sell very well then, and most people have forgotten it since. Fully understandable :-).
BTW - which game should we look at next? Do you want to write such a shortie yourself for one of the older games in our database? There might be some chance that you are the only one who has played a specific game - so it would be nice if you could share your insight with the other visitors. Just contact me... |
