The Spiderweb Software site is pointing out two reviews for 'Blades of Avernum. The first is at Macteens with a score of 5/5 and the second is from Cosmosgaming where the score is 6.5/10. Here's a snip from the former:
The first thing you will think when you play this game, is “What the hell happened to these graphics?” Well Mister Fancy Pants, who ever said that graphics made a game? The character art has a very nice home-brew feel that is a nice reprieve from the scores of 3D rendered art that most commercial games have these days. The in-game art has a necessary simplicity, and even though it is not up to most of today's standards, the game still is full featured and, believe it or not, fun. If you just look at screenshots or only play it for 10 minutes, you will say things like “This sucks.” When you do try this game, give an hour or two, otherwise you will be sorely disappointed. The Spiderweb games really shine with the depth of the story. While you may hate reading a couple of pages at the beginning of a scenario, it is a necessary evil that will make the game much more enjoyable. Though when you are reading them you do get some nice art to view.
