Fallout 2 offers a much larger game world than its predecessor, but it also comes with quite a few more flaws: it has a fair amount of bugs (be sure to download the patch after you install the game), an overkill of pop-culture references, and did I mention the bugs bugs bugs? A very good game, though I remember getting stuck in the very last place for some reason. This one has "rush job" stamped all over it. You get the feeling that after the success and critical acclaim of Fallout 1, the creators thought milking the series for everything it was worth was a good idea. While it still has the great gameplay of the original, it's story is pretty crappy. What really brings it down are the movie references all over it. In fact, it's hard to talk to an NPC without getting YET ANOTHER Silence of the Lambs or Terminator reference spat back at you. As well as that, they went and screwed up the ending. Whilst the original had about 4 different ways to finish the last menace in the game, this time, you only get one way. That is: Kill, kill, kill. Why even considered putting in a quake style "End Game Boss" is beyond me. However after all that, it's still got a bit of great atmosphere in it as well as a playable story. Replayability is also there which is good. It's a pity about the overkill with all the extra weapons though. It's a very original RPG concept (well, besides being a sequel, anyway!), and the funniest game I've played since Monkey Island. The problem, which has been mentioned here already, is the *phenomenal* amount of bugs evident, even on a single journey through. Though a lot are fixed by the official patch, it still leaves an annoying amount, and those without access to the patch may run afoul bugs of game-ruining proportions... not something that'll please you much, if you've just put 30+ hours into it. That, and the slightly suspect AI on your NPCs prevent it getting top marks. Too many times, I had to reload because one had just shot another to pieces, by accident or on purpose, and they do tend to gum you up while following you around. A lot of humor and the interface has much improved since FO1. Be sure you apply the latest patch before you wander of to eliminate a lot of annoying bugs. That, together with the best ending ever in a computergame and a COOL world and a lot more, made this game totally unforgettable.* On top on the above which goes for both games, Fallout 2 was even more diverce, deep, and complex that Fallout 1, in many aspects making it a better game and earning more replays from me than Fallout 1 did. BUT Fallout 1 was perfect in its own way and in some respects outdone Fallout 2: for example much cooler ending and more than the double amount of talking heads in a world half as big as in "2" making the world more close and personal. All in all, they still are my 2 favourite games, even after playing both Badlurs Gate 1 and 2 which are GREAT games but doesnt even come close to Fallouts geniousnes and divercity. In Fallout 2 I got to make my second coming, and by god the world was not ready for me. My first character a pyromaniacal machine gun wielding Jet addict. My second character... Hermes the mentally challanged hulk (many wouldn't try the kind of character who has an inttelligence less then 4 but it offers some unique experiences). This game was great. It had machine guns, mutant freaks, brown water, grave robbing and a cool pair of sunglasses(I'm not kidding the sunglasses are in their). This was and is an amazing game... Although I do have one unsolved mystery: how do you get to those 2 mysterious footlockers way in the northern part of Broken mills? Other than that, Fallout 2 improves everything that made Fallout a great game: huge world to explore, more quests, longer main story, more enemies, more equipment and most importantly: more humour! One of the few games that's made me laugh out loud while I was playing it. Great atmosphere too. I never completed the second one either, but that was just because Deus Ex caught my interest more at the time and pulled me away. Anyway, I still believe that, despite the numerous bugs, they are two of the best RPGs ever made, and two of the best PC games I have ever played. I have recently heard that the long awaited Fallout 3 has been sold to Bethesda who brought us Morrowind, another one of the best RPGs ever. So the wait may be worth it. I never saw any other game offering so much things and that can be renewed at each start after chosing another kind of character. Play a beaty, play an idiot that can barely talk and soooo much more.
