EGCore has posted an editorial on instancing which is increasingly popular amoung MMO designers. Here's an excerpt:
While it could certainly be said instancing helps the content bottleneck so many games experience, by providing the same content to whomever wants to experience it. This gamer believes that deep down players want to be unique, and uniqueness in MMORPG’s comes through unique experiences and accomplishments and interactions with others. Once instancing allows every Tom, Dick, and Harry to experience the same content at any time they desire, you accelerate the rate at which the content is eaten up. Content or lack of it, provides natural bottlenecks to slow advancement and thus slow content consumption.
