The U4 Multiplayer team has announced that despite the slow progress recently, they are now 99% done with the client. Also, if there is enough interest, then they will release the server so that others can host their own shards. Here's a snip:
All of the code is written, and all of the functionality is there. Everything that could be done in the original can be done in the online version, and then some. I will not be adding any more functionality, but I will continue to fix bugs as they are discovered and add anything to the game that may have been overlooked.
The server is very close to being done as well. It has gone through a major overhaul, mainly consisting of changes to the object inheritance structure and hopefully better pathfinding algorithms.
