RPG Vault's latest entry in their Online Worlds Roundtable with a group of MMO devs discussing the topic of growth in the industry. Here's Sony Online's Raph Koster:Toby mentions that he feels a lack of innovation is part of why the North American market has not reached the volume of the Asian market. It's worth pointing out that the complexity level of the Asian titles is by and large well behind the level of the titles from five years ago in this market (there are of course exceptions). What I see is two intersecting curves - we have more complex games aimed more at hardcore players, and Asia's burgeoning markets such as China have simpler games, but a huge market that we do not. I would expect China to start demanding more complex games as the players there grow jaded, while we continue to seek a larger market. |
