RPGDot 2002 Awards
Best MMORPG

The RPGDot Team, 2002-01-10

In the last weeks of December 2002, you had the opportunity to vote for the best RPGs released in 2002. Nobody knows better what these are then you the player and as such The RPGDot 2002 Awards will look good on any game receiving one.
We thank all those who entered their votes and helped us in making it possible to select the best games.

Best MMORPG

Several MMORPG's were released in 2002. But only one can be the best of them. And even though we do not have the largest online community there sure where enough to pick the following 3....

The winner: Asheron's Call 2 - The Fallen Kings
Arguably the first of the second generation MMORPG titles to come out, Asheron’s Call 2 (AC2) faced a lot of criticism even before its launch. Maybe because of the fact that Microsoft is behind the game. Suffice to say that despite the negative vibes, AC2 is a wonderful experience. Traveling through the world of Dereth is a pleasure to the eyes, and the whole mechanics of the game can easily be described with one word : fun! Where there were complicated features and steep learning curves, AC2 brought simplicity and a heavy focus on fun early on in the game. The story is also central to AC2’s experience, which puts it in a class of its own. AC2 deserves recognition and is very much worth taking the time to explore.

Runner Up: EverQuest - Planes of Power
EverQuest: The Planes of Power builds on the continuing Everquest story and adds a little bit of everything. A higher level cap, more high level skills, new monsters and weapons, new trade skill items and a vamped up user interface.
Eventhough the game can serve as a good starting point for new players it's geared more toward the die-hard gamer looking to level up his character ever further.

Second Runner Up: Dark Age of Camelot - Shroudes Isles
While its closest competitor has already 4 expansion packs under its belt, DAoC came out with its very first one a little over a year after its original release. SI brings in a lot of new content, including 3 new races, 6 new character classes, and three huge land masses to an already varied mix. Not the least of features is the new rendering engine used for the game, which updates DAoC’s graphics and brings it a step closer to the second generation titles already out or soon to be released. It smoothes out the massive Realm-vs-Realm play which was one of the biggest drawback of the original game. SI makes engaging armies of hundreds of players together possible and even enjoyable, which is no small feat! One of the greatest expansion packs in the genre’s history in my book.
