RPG Vault takes a closer look at Ankama Studio's Dofus.
The Project

Anthony "Tot" Roux: Take a blend of heroic-fantasy games and cartoon design, add a touch of offbeat humor, put the whole in a MMORPG and you obtain Dofus. The story begins with a tragedy that has caused chaos, the disappearance of the "Dofus", six magic dragon eggs... In a constantly evolving world, the adventurers, who can incarnate one of the 11 different characters available, have to find these precious Dofus eggs and restore peace in Amakna or enslave the population...

On a gigantic map, the players can venture in many different regions, villages and islands with different atmospheres - fantastic, colorful, funny, mysterious or even dark, but always with a touch of humor. They can take part in group / solo quests, dungeons or simply fight against monsters or against each other in turn-based tactical fights; they can learn a profession and become a tailor, jeweler, farmer, baker, hunter, alchemist...

Dofus is now three years old. It was originally launched in French and has gripped more than 200,000 players up to now. After launching the game, we noticed that the players were not only French, but also French-speaking Canadian, Belgian, Swiss... The idea thus came to us to develop an international version of the game in English. Of course, Dofus International was a big challenge for a small company like Ankama Studio. The competition is tough for this kind of game; however, we have always been sure that our game was different from other MMORPGs in terms of gameplay and atmosphere.
