1Up's Darren Gladstone wasn't overly impressed with Advent Rising, as evidenced by his rather lackluster review in which he gives it an overall 6 out of 10 (which was changed to an 8.7 out of 10 by readers - to end up as an averaged 7.3 out of 10 - sheesh)...
When you finally stop watching and start playing, a whole lot of power is placed at your fingertips, as weapons and superpowers improve with use. The problem is that you need about two extra fingers to juggle all the keys required to play. Even with a USB gamepad, you can't map out all the functions.not that we're complaining, as we usually prefer keyboards and mice. But here, you're madly stretching fingers in order to freeze time, levitate objects, dodge, shoot, and manage the unwieldy "flick targeting" cursor--which you control with the mouse wheel. Switching between targets shifts the camera, and it's also the only way to focus your superpowers on some objects. What was a handy targeting mechanic for the console version of Advent is now a serious detriment for PC gamers. There are times when we fought with the camera controls just to lift a rock and lob it at some alien's noggin. |
