A very detailed 'World of Warcraft' beta review (written by an Evil Avatar editor) can be found over at The Electric Idiom.Blizzard Entertainment, arguably one of the greatest developers in the gaming industry, has been working on a Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (MMORPG) called World of Warcraft for quite some time. The company’s got a very impressive track record, and some of its notable franchises include Starcraft, Warcraft, and Diablo. The Warcraft series consists of three core games (Warcraft I, II, and III) and two expansions; all of these were Real Time Strategy (RTS) games, so just about everyone was shocked when Blizzard announced that the next installment in the Warcraft series would be an MMORPG. The two genres are radically different, in that RTS games put the player in the position of a commander managing bases and leading vast armies into battle while MMORPGs put the player in the position of a single character (also called “avatar”) at a time. The MMORPG genre’s first big game was the infamous Everquest – I call it infamous because it earned the name Evercrack for its incredibly addictive gameplay. Another way that MMORPGs differ from RTS games is that the former requires a huge investment of time and effort when compared to the latter. But that’s enough background; I’ll get started on talking about the actual game. |
